Civilian Newsletter, March 2007

The second meeting of the Ohio Valley Soldiers Aid Society was held on Friday, March 9 in Vanport before the general meeting of the 63 PVI.

All civilian members are reminded to please pay their 2007 dues by remitting to Sarah Buffington. They are due a.s.a.p. $10.00 for individuals; $15.00 for family.

Listed below is a preliminary list of events that the Civilians are planning on attending:

March 24                               Cemetery Clean-up, Rochester, PA
This is the Saturday the Civilians have agreed to help with the cleanup of the Lacock Cemetery to help Frank Wisen with his senior project. Time is 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The Civilians will be serving a light lunch and are asking civilian participants to bring some cookies or cupcakes for dessert. Hoagies, potato chips, and cold drinks will be provided. A coffee run will be made. Channel 11 News will be there the first day. Bring work gloves and any equipment that you feel may be needed. Trash bags are also needed. Hope to see you there. It should be fun.

March 31/April 1                   Maple Syrup Festival, Beaver County, PA
Doing a fashion show on Saturday, March 31 at 10:00 a.m. on the Main Stage -- weather permitting. If you plan on participating in the fashion show, please email Sarah Buffington with a short description of your attire. Participants are asked to be there by 9:00 a.m. Even if you can only make it for part of the day, please plan on attending. Let us make this the best ever. An evening meal will be prepared for the civilians. Please check with Rose Shrum or Judy Bert if you are planning on staying for the meal and what you would like to donate. The group will be doing a Sanitary Commission scenario. Bring knitting, sewing, period material, period scissors, cotton batting, etc. - anything that you feel will add to the scenario, plus Sanitary Commission-type items to display.

April 29/April 30                   Old Stone House, Slippery Rock
No firm plans have been discussed by the Civilians.

April 28                                 Civil War Exposition and Tours of the Thomas Espy Post
                                              of the Grand Army of the Republic, Carnegie, PA
Hours 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. Andrew Carnegie Free Library, 300 Beechwood Avenue, Carnegie, PA 15106. The marriage of Jo Ann Schelby, who does a first-person impression of Mrs. Lincoln, and Mike Klein will take place at 4:30 p.m. Traditional music concert of the Home Front and Acoustic Shadows will start at 8:00 p.m. They are two acclaimed groups specializing in traditional music from the American Civil War. Tickets are required. Prices are $10.00, $7.50 for children or senior citizens. Tickets can be bought at the door. This event is being sponsored by the Carnegie Free Library and Music Hall. May 19                                  Ambridge Nationality Day Parade, Ambridge, PA
Step off is at 10:00 a.m. More info will be forthcoming or contact Scot Buffington.

May 26/May 27                   Burton, Ohio
Really a nice event for the Civilians. Done in Century Village, dinner and dance included in the price of the registration. Plenty of nice restaurants within walking distance. Watch for more info.

May 28                                 Memorial Day Parade, Beaver, PA
Men, women, and children dress in your best outfits and join the 63rd in the Beaver Memorial Day Parade. Step off is at 10:00 a.m. Meet around 9:00 a.m. at the Bike Shop. Arrangements can be made for anyone who would like to participate but do not feel they can march the whole route.

June 1-3                                Coopers Cabin, Cabot, PA
This is an event that our fellow reenactors of the 78th PVI are having. The cabin is located on Route 356 across from the Concordia Lutheran home. Vickie Hooks will be getting more information to us as to what is expected. If you can only go for a few hours, all the help we can give them will be appreciated. As soon as more information is available, it will be posted and emailed to you.

Marian McCullough is doing well with her physical therapy on her recent knee surgery.
